Photosynthetic carboxylating enzymes in marine phytoplankton’
نویسندگان
چکیده
Measurements of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RUBPCase) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase) in several phytoplankton cultures and natural phytoplankton populations showed a positive correlation of photosynthesis with RUBPCase activity but not with PEPCase activity. Observed ratios of RUBPCase:PEPCase were high in log phase cultures when photosynthesis was maximal and low in stationary phase. There was no significant correlation between photosynthesis and the ratio of RUBPCase:PEPCase activity in natural populations. The rate of carbon assimilation by the intact algae was significantly greater than that by the isolated carboxylases. In both natural phytoplankton populations and laboratory cultures, the ratio of photosynthesis:carboxylase activity depended on the physiological state of the cells, being greatest when the photosynthetic rate was highest.

Minireview a Perspective on Photosynthesis in the Oligotrophic Oceans: Hypotheses concerning Alternate Routes of Electron Flow
Many regions of the open, oligotrophic oceans are depleted of nutrients, especially nitrogen and iron. The biogenesis and the functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus may be specialized and tailored to the various marine habitats. In this minireview, we discuss some new findings with respect to photosynthetic processes in the oceans. We focus on findings that suggest that some cyanobacteria ...

Photosynthesis vs. irradiance relationships were determined for phytoplankton communities from seven lakes in the Canadian high Arctic, including ultraoligotrophic Char Lake, nutrient-enriched Meretta Lake, and two meromictic lakes. The derived photosynthetic parameters were low for all samples, with a mean (6SD) light-saturated photosynthetic rate (P ) of 0.46 (60.28) g C g21 chlorophyll a (Ch...
متن کاملExamples of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) application in marine ecology studies in the northern Adriatic
Photosynthetic pigments have proved to be useful biomarkers of the abundance, composition and physiological status of the phytoplankton biomass in the marine environment. Using HPLC pigment analysis, we determined phytoplankton community structure in three different marine environments: in the area of a fish farm, in the area of sewage outlets, and in the mucilaginous aggregates. At the referen...
متن کاملCarbon concentrating mechanisms in eukaryotic marine phytoplankton.
The accumulation of inorganic carbon from seawater by eukaryotic marine phytoplankton is limited by the diffusion of carbon dioxide (CO2) in water and the dehydration kinetics of bicarbonate to CO2 and by ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase's (RubisCO) low affinity for its inorganic carbon substrate, CO2. Nearly all marine phytoplankton have adapted to these limitations and evolved ...

The photosynthetic activity of marine phytoplankton from five algal classes (Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira oceanica, Thalassiosira weissflogii, Dunaliella tertiolecta, Mantoniella squamata, Emiliania huxleyi, Pavlova lutheri and Heterosigma akashiwo) was investigated under identical growth conditions to determine interspecies differences. Primary photochemistry ...
